CINCINNATI (WLS) - Men with erectile dysfunction have the option of buying Viagra, a drug that's been used for centuries to treat impotence in men and to increase male sexual performance, in the United States.
But the drug's maker, Pfizer, says its decision to ban sales of the drug has left it unable to compete with the likes of the drug's generic competitors.
For the second week in a row, the company has stopped selling the drug, after a Viagra competitor failed to win a patent and, in some cases, has lost it for the first time.
The drug was developed by British pharmaceutical company Pfizer in the 1980s, and is the brand name of Viagra. It was approved in 1998 by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, a process that takes time to allow the drug to go on sale. The drug, known generically as sildenafil, is marketed under the brand name Revatio, which means "drug of the same kind" and is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. Viagra, the main ingredient in Viagra, is a popular treatment for erectile dysfunction, and the drug has gained recognition for its effectiveness and popularity among men with ED.
The FDA approved Viagra in 1998, but since then the drug has been pulled from the market, a decision that Pfizer has made to stop selling it.
"We were disappointed," said Steven Nissen, a Pfizer spokesman.
Nissen said Pfizer had "stalled" about the decision in two ways, "first and foremost."
"It's difficult to get the drug to compete with the competition," Nissen said. "So, as a matter of fact, in the first week of October, when we took the decision, it was the first time that the FDA has taken a position that is considered to be a reasonable one."
Viagra is the brand name of the drug, which works by increasing blood flow to the penis, but it also contains ingredients like sildenafil and vardenafil, which are known as PDE5 inhibitors. These drugs work by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, which allows blood to flow into the penis when you are sexually excited, and when sexually aroused, causing an erection.
In addition to sildenafil and vardenafil, Viagra was originally developed to treat pulmonary hypertension and angina, but the FDA approved it in 1998 to treat ED and pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Viagra's patent expired in March 1998 and the company is now seeking to sell the drug in the United States, after an unsuccessful attempt to sell it back.
"It is a very interesting drug that has had a very significant impact on the lives of patients and we are excited to have been able to provide Viagra for a number of reasons," said Steven Nissen, Pfizer's spokesman.
Viagra was first approved by the FDA in 1998 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The drug was originally intended to treat pulmonary hypertension, and it was later reclassified as a treatment for angina.
However, a patent was lost after a competitor failed to win a patent, and the drug went generic.
For the first time, the drug's active ingredient is sildenafil, which is the active ingredient in Viagra. Nissen said Viagra is a better choice for men with ED than Viagra because men with ED have better blood flow to the penis, which can cause an erection when sexually stimulated.
"I think that's the greatest opportunity for Viagra to become a brand name, as it's been the most effective drug for a long time," Nissen said.
Viagra was launched in the United States in 1998, following a similar effort, but the drug has been pulled from the market, a decision Pfizer made last month to stop selling the drug.
While Viagra is effective for many men with ED, Nissen said it is still a good idea to buy it in bulk, as the drug can be more expensive.
"We are talking about a few dollars a pill in a month," he said.
